Naruto: Kakashi Hatake Age Timeline, Explained

Kakashi Hatake is not only a mentor or teacher for the series’ main characters like Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura, but later, he is also Naruto’s friend. However, it is not his role in the protagonists’ life but rather his cool and calm nature, hidden talents, and skills as a ninja that makes him a fan favorite.

While researching Naruto characters, it was difficult to understand the timeline until I came across the Shonen Road website. The expert anime magazine features articles on various manga series and anime, complete with all the geeky details you need to understand the age timelines. Hence, some of the information in this article is from their website.

Early Years:

His birthday is on 15th September. Like other characters on the show, he has a tragic backstory. His mother passed away while he was still very young, and soon his father also killed himself when Kakashi was only 5 years old. Despite the difficulties his character faces from an early age, he also achieves great heights in a short period. He graduated from the Ninja Academy at 5 years of age. Similarly, at age 6, he entered the Chunin exams and fought against opponents like Might Guy.

Kakashi was 12 years old when the Third Shinobi World War took place. He was one of the few people left behind in Konoha village as the rest had gone to war; hence, he was appointed a Jonin due to his expertise and skills as a shinobi. After the war, Kakashi loses his close friends, so he is encouraged to join an assassination group, Anbu. He was 13 years old when he joined the group.

Naruto Series, Part One:

When the Naruto series began, Naruto was 12 to 13 years old. According to the Shonen Road website, Kakashi is believed to have a 14 years difference from Naruto. Thus, Kakashi should be between 26 to 27 years old at this point in the series.

There is a time skip of two and a half years between the end of the Naruto series and the start of the Naruto: Shippuden series.

Naruto: Shippuden Series, Part Two:

Naruto is 15 years old at the start of this series, so Kakashi should be 29 years old. Naruto: Shippuden lasts for almost two years as Naruto is 15 years at its beginning and 17 years by the end of the series. The end of this series is marked by the end of the Fourth Shinobi World War or the Fourth Great Ninja War. Thus, we can approximate that Kakashi was 31 years old by the end of the Shippuden series. Moreover, his height remained constant at 5’11” or 181 cm in both parts of the Naruto series.

You might be familiar with Sharingan’s and how it helps Shinobis in battle. According to the Shonen Road website, Kakashi lost his Sharingan during the Fourth Great Ninja War. Follow up on articles by the Shonen Road magazine to find out more about Kakashi’s role in the war and how he lost his Sharingan.

There is another time skip between the Naruto: Shippuden and Boruto series, but of a much longer span – 15 years.

Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, The Sequel

Naruto is 33 years old when the Boruto series begins, so Kakashi should be 47 to 48 years old. Similarly, Naruto’s son, Boruto, is 10 to 11 years old, close to the minimum age required to be accepted into the Ninja Academy. After two years, when Boruto is 12 years old, Naruto would be around 35 years, and Kakashi would be between 49 and 50 years old. As the Boruto series progresses, we can observe visible signs of aging on Kakashi’s face, like wrinkles, and notice a decrease in his appearance in scenes of the show. Nevertheless, his character is still loved by fans of the show.

Kakashi as Konoha’s Hokage:

Kakashi superseded Tsunade and became the Sixth Hokage of Konoha. After the end of the Fourth Shinobi World War, he assumed this position, marking the end of the Naruto: Shippuden series. Hence, Kakashi was 31 years old at that time. Only the most powerful and strongest ninja in the village was worthy of the Hokage title. Kakashi had achieved a lot since a very young age compared to other ninjas who took much longer to accomplish the same things. This set him apart from other shinobis and made him deserving of the Hokage title. He remained the Hokage for 13 years till the position was handed over to Naruto.
